I sift through dozens of resumes daily, hundreds weekly. I’m always fascinated by the choices candidates make in how they present themselves in the documents they use to express interest in a job.
You can tell who has put a lot of thought and care into their resume, cover letter, and portfolio. But it also amazes me how in an industry which is predicated on execution of the details, how often a candidate lacks the details in their application documents.
I understand that in the haste to discuss your accomplishments in your previous and current employment, some of these details may fall through the cracks. But when preparing your resume, there are some basic non-negotiables which should always be included.
— Contact information
— Previous employers
— Dates you were previously employed
— Your title at previous jobs
— Location of your previous employer
— Certifications or higher education degrees
I believe the small habits of a person reflect the whole character of that person. How can I trust that you’re going to remember to handle the details of maintaining the golf course which takes its presentation to the next level if you’re not paying attention to the details of your application documents?
So take plenty of review time for your cover letter and resume. Ask people you trust to give it a once or twice over. Trust the spell check function on your computer. And make sure your documents reflect the person you’re trying to present to a hiring committee.
